Beside collecting and paintin 1/72 figures, studying military history and the research of uniforms, I have another hobby which has a link to our hobby.
It is the collecting of historical novels. In Germany they are called "Groschenromane". Since 1900 there had been weekly issues of such magazines.
Two that are interesting from a historical point of view are two series from around 1910.
One is "Unter Deutscher Flagge". The subject of these novels are the Franco-Prussian war and German colonial wars. Many are fictional stories, but others are written by historians like for example Carl Bleibtreu and cover historical facts.
The other series is "Aus großer Zeit", or "Unter Fahnen und Standarten".
This series covers the SYW and the Napoleonic period. Of course from a German point of view:-)
Some are not historical correct, other are.
The interesting things are the covers, more uniformplates for my archive
Of course there are other such novels in later periods. The French foreign legion was a subject in the time before WW1. It should shock the German youth how the Germans were handled by the French. We needed our manpower ourselves....
There are several series, covering WW1. Most very patriotic...
From 1939 to 1942 we had of course another series. Here our Landsers were the heroes. Some died, because you have to give your life for the fatherland. But everybody took dozens of others with him...
After WW2 it changed again. Now the hero ususal dies, war is terrible and should not happen again.
If you are interested in this subject, I can write another post about it. As I wrote before, the covers are the interesting thing.
The cover illustrations are brilliant, full of inspiration for converting and painting figures, I also liked to see the old advertisements, they give you an insight into another world long gone by.
AntwortenLöschenVery interesting to see and read about this! I'll be glad if you continue this topic! Vielen dank!
AntwortenLöschenI'm glad you have found inspiration for several periods, even if you don't wargame them. I'd like to hear more
AntwortenLöschenI have always had a fondness for historical novels - probably explains my fondness for history. If 'groschenromane' means 'great romance' or (better yet) 'high romance', it is an altogether appropriate nomenclature, for mine.
